A shiur (traditional lecture) analyzing the laws of leprosy. Rabbi Jacobs reads through the biblical text of Leviticus 14:33-57, which outlines the treatment of the contaminated house, and then develops by reference to interpretations in the Mishnah, Talmud, and in subsequent periods. He demonstrates that the Sages and rabbis throughout the ages endeavoured to blunt the unpromising, disturbing character of the biblical text by deducing moral principles and messages from it. This in turn begs the question of whether the law emanates from the biblical text, or whether it originates from the conscience of these halakhic authorities, who then utilize the text to justify their positions.
