To have the Psalms in modern English is not to everyone’s taste but those who are attracted by the idea can do worse than use this fine rendition. The Hebrew titles are given in footnotes but the translators have supplied headings of their own as a description of the content of each particular Psalm. Thus Psalm 148 is headed: “A Call for the Universe to Praise God” while the first Psalm is entitled “True Happiness.” The text is attractively laid out and there are a number of pleasant line drawings.
