Aftermath of the Affair

The Jacobs Affair was, in some respects, a watershed moment in Anglo-Jewish history. The 1964 controversy eventually abated, but the tension it had generated would not lay dormant for long. The creation of a new organization of Masorti synagogues, as well as a few other events in the following years, triggered renewed debates in the country over Louis Jacobs’s philosophy and legacy. Explore some of these fascinating chapters of Anglo-Jewish history in the following categories:

Masorti:

Recollections and comments by Masorti institutions or officials about the Jacobs Affair and its consequences.

Conversion:

Ensuing clashes between the United Synagogue and Masorti concerning questions of personal status of individuals.

Subsequent Scandals:

Renewed outbursts in the media directly linked to the original Jacobs Affair.
